Gergő Rácz has joined to the Volunteer and Internship Programme of the Carpathian Foundation on the 13th of October, 2015. Gergő is completing his compulsory school community service at the Foundation. We talked about the role and importance of voluntariness.
You are completing your community service duty at our Foundation which is a requirement of graduation since 2012. How much do you feel it compulsory?
It is compulsory for me because I cannot graduate without the 50 hours of community service. However, since I am working for the Foundation, this work is not just a mandatory requirement, but I feel it much more than that.
Have you ever done any voluntary activity?
Some months ago I did. I was a volunteer in the IWAS Fencing Championship which was rather an experience than a work for me – I met new people, made friends. This was a short period event, and it was not that event, which convinced me to volunteer later. Those two months, which I have spent with working for the Foundation are obviously justify the fact that I will be doing voluntary work with pleasure.
What are your experiences according to your voluntary work?
During my voluntary work I have gathered different kinds of knowledge, I discovered hidden values in myself. I found out that I have fine communicational skills, and I can integrate in totally unknown environment fairly easily. The picture of office work have been rewritten in my mind: whenever we are talking about this kind of work, I no longer think of boring and soul destroying 8 hours of work.
According to your viewpoint, why it is important for the youngsters to do voluntary work (besides that it is a requirement of graduation)?
Nowadays, more and more people must learn the meaning of altruism, learn what does it mean to do something for a greater good, not for self-interest. The work of volunteers is beneficial for communities, they place others in focus, instead of their own goals. Sadly, this mentality can be found in less and less people in the world.
Why is it good to be a volunteer, in your opinion?
Voluntary work is a prefect way of gathering experience, because one is able to work - during his/her studies - at places where he/she can hardly apply to work even in his/her adulthood. Furthermore, it is not a must to give up school and studies for doing full time job. In consequence, almost anyone is able to gather some advantage for his/her adult years, as if he/she performs well during the voluntary work, besides finishing school studies, lately, he/she can get a job at a given place.
