In April 2023, the Carpathians Foundation - Hungary launched a new project entitled "From the Alps to the Carpathians - Strengthening governance models for sustainable development in mountainous areas of Central Europe", supported by the European Regional Development Fund Interreg Central Europe Programme 2021-2027.
Continuing the professional work in the project, a Stakeholder Meeting was held online on 16 Januar,2024 with NGO representatives from 5 countries and international experts of the project, where the stakeholders were informed about the progress of the project, our previous relevant projects, the project strategy and action plan for the Carpathians region. The Carpathian Foundation's role in the Alps to Carpathians project is to develop the Carpathian Civil Society Platform, which aims to expand and operate a cross-border cooperation network to support and increase the effectiveness of cooperation between rural NGOs and other organisations working with target groups on equal opportunities (young people, people living in poverty, Roma excluded, people with disabilities, etc.).
The project partners will develop four action plans
1. Action Plan for sustainable tourism development in the Carpathians will be developed is explicitly narrowed to four out of seven Carpathian countries: Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and Romania, with a particular focus on the PL-SK border region where the Cross-Border Functional Areas (CBFAs) will be tested
2. Action Plan for future Alpine Pearls EGTC will be implemented in four out of seven countries of the Alpine region, i.e. in Austria, Germany, Italy and Slovenia
3. Action Plan for public-private cooperation in the Sudetes for regional products and tourism services will be implemented in Czech and Polish parts of the Sudety Mts. region (shared by three countries.
4. Action Plan for citizens involvement in decision making processes in the Carpathians aims at facilitating the cooperation of civil society organizations from the whole Carpathian region (shared by seven countries, namely Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, Chechia and Serbia. It is clearly focuses on establishing a new governance structure, facilitating cooperation of civil society organizations from the wider Carpathian region. (CF –Hungary leads the process.) The project will be brought to the Carpathian Convention level seeking its endorsement and possible mainstreaming within the Convention work for further application and institutional support of the project results in the future.
