Today, Denis Mukwege, a gynecologist helping victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nadia Murad, a Yazidi rights activist and survivor of sexual slavery by Islamic State, won the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize. European donors can support his valuable work through TGE.
The 1st session of two-day training course within our programme called ‚Building Capacities for Effective Early Childhood Development of Marginalized Roma in Hungary’ was successfully organized in Noszvaj on 18-19 September 2018. 11 out of 12 supported civic Roma and pro-Roma organisations were represented at the training course led by Éva Szomor. On the 1st day participants attended lectures on the course of normal childhood development, and the development of language and communication skills.
In the frame of the Carpathian Civil Society Platform project – continuing the work started at the local workshops – we are organizing an Inter-regional meeting in Kosice on October 2-3, 2018. The representatives of the civil society organizations from Slovakia, Ukraine, Poland and Hungary can meet each other, discuss the findings of the local workshops, they can map the possibilities for international cooperation and can establish the framework of future collaboration together.

Welcome to our summer edition. This newsletter features an interview with Rozalia Czaki from Odoheiu Secuiesc Community Foundation, our Romanian partner. Our Romanian partner foundation has been celebrating their 10th anniversary.
In 2018, we announced our annual Carpathian Equal Opportunity Scholarship Programme again, within which framework we were looking for disadvantaged students studying in higher education and living in the region.
We were delighted to receive a large number of excellent applications from candidates. In the end, we chose to support Rostás Ádám, who is studying at Eszterházy Károly University to be a geography and history teacher.
The kick-off meetings of the second implementation year of our project entitled "Strengthening and activating small communities of Northeast Hungary" (EFOP-1.3.5-16-2016-00915) were successfully organized on 24 May and 14 June, 2018 in Heves and Nógrád counties. The first year of the project was successfully closed in April 2018 and now we have started the new implementation year with cooperation with another 16 CSOs to strengthen the cohesion of their small rural communities.
As part of our Carpathian Civil Society Platform project we organized a Preparatory Workshop on 5 June 2018 in Eger. 18 people from 11 civil organizations participated from Heves, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Hajdú-Bihar and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg counties. The participants presented the activities of their civic organizations and collected the internal and external challenges that they face. The participants suggested possible solutions for the problems listed.
End of May the conference Practical Philanthropy across Europe took place in Warsaw. We moreover had the opportunity to attend the EFC Conference Culture Matters, Connecting Citizens and Uniting Communities.
Carpathian Foundation-Hungary has launched a new program to contribute to better educational outcomes of marginalized Roma children in Northeast Hungary by supporting concrete, measurable local development initiatives of nonprofit Roma organizations targeting Early Childhood Development (ECD).
We have started a new program to strengthen the cooperation between civil organizations of the Carpathian region.
